New Residential Construction Statistics for August released

On Wednesday, the U.S. Census Bureau and Dept. of Housing and Urban Development released new residential construction statistics for August 2012.  Click HERE to read the full report.

  • In August, privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits rose 24.5% over last year to 803,000.  Of that total, 263,000 were for buildings with five or more units.
  • Privately-owned housing starts increased 29.1% to 750,000 (208,000 for units in buildings with five or more units).
  • Privately-owned housing completions were 11.7% higher than last August (689,000).  Of that total, 193,000 were for buildings with fiver or more units.
This information, coupled with the recent price increase and limited availability of panel substrate (oriented strand board and plywood), supports positive growth in the overall housing construction.  Barrier is pleased that it appears housing demand is starting to increase again to support population growth.  We are hopeful that next fiscal year will result in a second consecutive year of increased shipment volume.
