Another Multi-family Townhome Project Uses Blazeguard!

Jim Dukart, Barrier's National Sales Manager, visited a townhome project last week that chose Blazeguard Fire Rated Sheathing to meet their fire code requirements. He captured some great shots of our product in the installation phase. A case study has been developed to showcase this use of Blazeguard as a sales tool for future multi-family roof deck projects.

Blazeguard installed on (4) feet of either side of a party wall.

Barrier Visits Major NYC Public Housing Project using Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing for Exterior Walls

Blazeguard as used on the entire exterior walls of a 24 unit building in Markham Gardens

Barrier President & CEO Michael Huddy recently toured a major public housing project in metropolitan New York City that is using Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing to protect its exterior walls.

The overall project, first announced in 2006, is a $60 million redevelopment of the Markham Gardens public housing development located in the West Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island's north shore. Blazeguard was chosen for its dual role as a fire-retardant barrier and structural sheathing component for the exterior walls of some 250 units in 24 buildings. Installation of Blazeguard began in mid-summer and will be concluded within the next several months.

A larger view of the Markham Gardens project.

"Barrier is proud to be associated with this project, on more than one level," says Huddy. "On the one hand, the innovative use of building materials to offer both fire resistance and structural strength is impressive. In addition, it is nice to be associated with a project designed and built with an eye toward improving living conditions and uplifting the local community."

Huddy met with one of Markham Gardens principal designing architects, Lawrence Benjamin of DHK architects; with Blazeguard supplier Best Building Products of Walden, NY; and on-site with project managers from contractor Speigel Associates.

"Blazeguard offers a healthy balance that gives us a one-or-two-hour fire separation without eating up too much interior space while offering three-dimensional stability," says Benjamin.

Benjamin was so intrigued by Blazeguard's all-in-one fire barrier capabilities that he made a special trip to the job site to see the product once it arrived.

"Hopefully this will become the template for 'green' building," Benjamin adds, speaking of the Markham Gardens project in general, but noting Blazeguard's contribution as an environmentally-friendly, chemical-free fire retardant. "We are fans of the material," he says. "The context in which it is being used is pretty dynamic."

Blazeguard added to California Wildfire Zone Products List

Barrier is proud to announce that Blazeguard Fire-Rated Sheathing has been added to the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Products List maintained by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Blazeguard is listed in three different sections of the WUI list; Exterior Wall Siding and Sheathing, Under Eave, and Ignition-Resistant Materials. It is the only material listed under all three categories and one of very few products that have qualified under either the "Under Eave" or "Ignition Resistant Materials" categories.

For a full listing of WUI Products, the text of Chapter 7A Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire Exposure [SFM] of the 2007 California Building Code and further information about Wildland Hazards and Wildlife Urban Interface regulations, click here.

Barrier has already received numerous inquiries about using Blazeguard in California WUI applications and we are optimistic this will lead to great sales opportunities. Please continue to watch our website for a special section devoted to California applications as well as case studies of actual California applications.Fire rated sheathing, fire rated osb, fire rated plywood, multi-family construction, small cap, otcbb, ibtgf, barrier, blazeguard, mycoguard, fire-rated paint, intumescent paint, mold resistant, mildew resistant, fire-retardant plywood, frt, sips, fire rated structurally insulated panels, fire rated wall assemblies, fire rated commercial modular roofing, fire rated modular home construction, green building products, LEED, electrical panel backer board, SIPs; wildfire protection, forest fire protection; non combustible exterior wall sheathing, ignition resistant exterior wall sheathing, ignition resistant eaves; non combustible eaves; ignition resistant soffets; non combustible soffets; ESR-1365; WUI approved/listed; California state fire marshal approved building materials
